Most parents who have had a child with a concussion know the drill--turn off the TV, take the phone, and try to convince a normally active child to do nothing. Typically 1-2 days of strict rest is recommended, followed by a gradual return to normal activity. Now imagine this tug of war over a longer period of time--weeks, or even months.

While the race to uncover the best treatments for concussion has long been underway, a new article published in the journal Pediatrics may bring good news to kids and parents alike when it comes to the dreaded time out.

Researchers compared the recoveries of pediatric patients who followed strict rest for 5 days versus those who followed strict rest for 1-2 days with a gradual return to school and activities. Surprisingly, a longer period of rest showed no added benefit, and in fact, may have contributed to increased symptom reporting.

While initial rest is still considered the best line of treatment following a concussion, physicians are now using a more comprehensive tool set that typically includes everything from cognitive testing and symptom scores to vision assessments and balance testing. By giving patients tailored school and activity modifications, physicians are able to gradually return students and athletes to daily life while avoiding lengthy periods of rest.
